Charging piles involve the consumption of electric energy and the settlement of electricity charges. The accuracy of their measurement values is directly related to the vital interests of consumers.

In October 2020, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation included electric vehicle charging piles in the “Catalogue of Measuring Instruments for Mandatory Management”.

Among them, it is stipulated that the mandatory inspection of electric vehicle charging piles will be postponed to January 1, 2023, and local governments are encouraged to explore specific mandatory inspection methods.

Key points of charging pile metering

According to relevant regulations, the calibration of charging piles (machines) is divided into initial calibration, subsequent calibration, and in-use inspection.

The main charging pile calibration items include appearance inspection, insulation resistance test, working error, indication error, payment amount error, and clock indication error.

1. Appearance inspection means checking the markings on the nameplate of the charging pile, including name and model; manufacturer name; standard the product is based on; serial number and year of manufacture; maximum voltage, minimum voltage, minimum current, and maximum current; constant; accuracy level; unit of measurement.

Focus on checking whether the markings are complete and the handwriting is clear;
  • whether there is obvious damage;
  • Whether there are measures to prevent unauthorized persons from entering data or operating;
  • Whether the number of displayed digits meets the regulations;
  • Whether the basic functions are normal; the technical indicators of the test output interface and communication interface of the charging pile for verification should meet the requirements of relevant standards.

2. The insulation resistance test checks factors such as the electrical safety performance of the charging pile during use.

3. The working error mainly measures the error of the electric energy value of the tested charging pile. The working error of a level 1 charging pile should be less than ±1.0%; the working error of a level 2 charging pile should be less than ±2.0%.

4. The indication error mainly measures the indication error of the charging power of the tested charging pile. The indication error of the level 1 charging pile should be less than ±1.0%; the indication error of the level 2 charging pile should be less than ±2.0%.

5. Payment amount error The payment amount error refers to the absolute value of the difference between the “payment amount displayed by the charging pile” and the “payable amount calculated based on the unit price and the charging energy indication of the charging pile”, and should not exceed the minimum payment variably.

6. Clock indication error The difference between the indicated time of the charging pile and the standard clock is the clock indication error.

For charging piles with a time-sharing billing function, the clock indication error of the charging pile should not exceed 5s during the first calibration; it should not exceed 3min during subsequent calibration.

After the calibration, for the qualified charging piles, the metrology agency will issue a calibration certificate, paste the calibration mark in a prominent position, and seal the position of the electric energy meter or metering module used inside. The calibration cycle of the charging pile is generally not more than 3 years.

Tips for safe charging of electric vehicles

1. Before charging, check the charging equipment (including cables and connectors) to ensure that they are in good condition.

2. If any abnormal situation occurs during use, press the emergency stop button immediately to cut off all input and output power.

3. Do not place flammable, explosive, or combustible materials, chemicals, flammable vapors, or other dangerous goods near the charging station.

4. Do not use the charging gun or charging cable if it is defective, cracked, worn, broken, or the charging cable is exposed.
