How to develop your APP for charging stations?

How do you pay at the gas station? There will be workers waiting for you and help you fuel your inner combustion engines. For EV charging stations, no employees are needed. Many charging point operators have their APP to ensure seamless charging and paying. Plug Share, Wallbox, Charge Point. What should be a charging APP like?

Functions of charging APP

Navigation and Map

Locate charging points

Users can use the map in the APP to find the charge points nearby. It can show the charging point’s basic information like output power, AC or DC, type of charging connector and its status, charging, availability, fault, or testing. It is better to visualize it. For example, in China, green always indicates charging, blue represents standby and red means there is something wrong with the charger. When a charging point has two guns, the circle stands for the charger point should be divided into two 2 parts and there is a number on it to show how much output power it has in total.

Functions of charging APP

Charging station details

When you click a certain charging station, it is better to have the location of the charging station, the service contract for it, its charging price, and its opening time. It is better that it can show the nearby service points like restaurants, cinemas, shipping malls, and so on, where drivers can kill some time.

User-Submitted Charging Points

You can also design a function that anyone can upload charging points into your app. Of course, you need to have workers confirm that and decide whether to approve it or reject it. With more charging points in your APP, drivers are more likely to use your app.

Route-based charging

It is better to have pass-by charging station navigation to let those who are hurry to get to their destination and require on-the-move charging. In this way, they can choose the charging station on their route without wasting time.

Filter/Search

It is also vital to have a filter for drivers to choose a suitable charging station. For example, you want to filtrate the charging station with CHAdeMO guns or lower the price for charging. And if you have a destination, you can search for a charging station near your destination.

Port type

Charging status

When the car gets charged, drivers can monitor the charging status on the APP, such as charging voltage, charging current, charging time, SOC, and how much time you need to charge your EV to 80%, how many ranges does the EV have when it finishes charging?

Charging reference

You can also design a function where anyone can upload the specific information of the EV so drivers can choose a suitable charging station to charge. For example, BYD Atto 3 Comfort and Design has an 11kw on-board charger, so you don’t have to find a 22kw for a better charging speed because your OBC doesn’t support higher power charging. Its DC charging time is 29 minutes from 30%-80% when you use a 150kw charging station.

Pay for charging

To pay for charging, drivers should register an account with a virtual E-wallet and drivers can top up the wallet through third-party payment. For example, in China, people use WeChat Pay and Ali Pay. In Uzbekistan, people use Click and Payme. In Thailand, people may use Prompt Pay and Line Pay. What is the most popular online payment in your country?

Update

Never forget to inform users to update your app when you fix some bugs and launch a new version. So it is better to inform users when they open the app.

In addition to the above functions, to make the app more user-friendly, the app interface should be simple and clean, with no more than one step for each option. You don’t have to keep clicking for a function. Filtering charging facilities should be intuitive and graphical.

Above is my immature idea about what should a good app for charging be like. What is your idea? Do you think it’s complicated to make a charging station app? Don’t be afraid, just make it first and then improve the functions slowly!
